Why does my heart rate spike after heavy meals, and is it normal?
I noticed my resting heart rate goes from 68 to around 85–90 bpm about 30 minutes after eating a carbohydrate-heavy dinner. Should I be concerned or is this physiological?

This is a very common physiological response known as postprandial tachycardia. After eating, your body redirects significant blood flow to the digestive tract to digest and absorb nutrients, which prompts the heart to beat slightly faster to maintain systemic blood pressure. To minimize this effect: • Eat smaller, more frequent portions instead of large heavy dinners. • Reduce simple refined sugars and carbohydrates. • Avoid laying flat immediately after eating — a gentle 10-minute walk helps. However, if you feel dizziness, chest tightness, or skipped beats (palpitations) during these episodes, an in-person ECG is recommended.
